Conflict Between Settlers and Land Owners: In 1990, a group of bold settlers shrugged off the threat of hired gunmen to displace the inhabitants of Cucho Hacienda ranch, located in northern Quito. The settlers named their new community Camino a la Libertad (“Pathway to Freedom”). The Camino settlers gradually developed their neighborhood despite fierce and sustained resistance from the original owners.
